Segregation Academies, State Funding and Middle Georgia Children
Education
March 3 - 7, 2025 | On the Table
Description
After watching the 12-minute short documentary together, "Cookie & Zoe: 60 years after Desegregation" ,a film which showcases the decisions regarding school choice that a Black Macon family has to make when it comes to educating their young great-granddaughter.
Table members will review Middle Georgia's history with segregation and the segregation academies that were developed to subvert federal desegregation mandates in the 60's. Table members will discuss the current resegregation of public and private school spaces and examine nontraditional learning spaces that have been created in Middle Georgia that directly confront this community divide.
Participants will brainstorm ways in which the community can come together and make a unified attempt at dismantling resegregation in our schools.
What is On the Table
On the Table is a one of a kind opportunity to bring people of diverse backgrounds together to have meaningful conversations about topics that are important to the community. This community-wide initiative seeks to explore the ways in which we have the power to collaborate to make our community stronger, safer, and more dynamic.
Following On the Table, the Community Foundation of Central Georgia will survey participants to find out what issues matter most to them and what kinds of ideas for solutions emerged from the day’s conversations. We’ll also help to share some stories of participants to help inspire others to make a difference.
